Problem Solving
Seals prevent or limit the passage of gases, liquids and solids from one area to another. In technical components, seals can prevent spillages of gases or lubricants, and keep water, air or dust out. By using self-adhesive seals, seal performance can be enhanced, and the durability and efficiency of the structure increased.
Seals are used both in mechanical and electrical/electronic components. In mechanical components, the joints between metal parts are usually sealed against the ingress of dirt and leakage of lubricants. Customer-specific solutions cover different shapes and sizes of the components and the width and type of the joints (gasket, frame gasket, round cord, dust seal).
Seals in electrical devices and electronics prevent the ingress of dirt, dust and liquids. Seals can protect highly sensitive electronic components. We manufacture your seals exclusively from high quality, durable elastic foams or chemical-resistant elastomers (Norseal®, Poron®, Bisco®, EPDM, NBR, SBR, APTK, Scotchfoam™, Moosgummi, CR, FKM, PUR, PVC, EVA, Gummi, Teroform®, Silikon).

Self-adhesive solutions can cover all requirements for the electrical or thermal conductivity of a connection.
1. Electrical conductivity
Electronic devices and components can interfere with each other. Electrically conductive textile tapes (with EMC shielding) are used for EMI/RFI shielding and for grounding purposes in order to reduce or eliminate interferences caused by reflection and absorption. Furthermore, they are used to avoid electrostatic charges (potential equalization) and are suitable for the electrical field or electrostatic potential control of high voltage cables and transformers and for shielding. Electrically conductive copper and aluminum foils can be used, too, which can be equipped with conductive adhesives, for example acrylate adhesives. Those products can be used in testing laboratories for the development of prototypes and electronic designs. Special adhesive films provide conductivity in the Z-axis to connect printed circuit board tracks (conductive pads, isotropic and anisotropic absorbers, shielding, electrically conducting, ESD, RFI and EMC).
Aluminum foils offer good conductivity and sufficient EMI shielding properties. They have a low contact resistance and represent a cost-optimized alternative to copper foils. Copper foils have very high conductivity. They are particularly well-suited to shielding electromagnetic interferences and grounding. To optimize solderability, tin-plated adhesives can be provided.
2. Thermal conductivity
Thermal conductive adhesive films are used because of their good thermal conductivity in the bonding of heat sink components. In addition, they meet the requirements for vibration damping and gap closing. Thermal conductive adhesives can be processed easily and accelerate the production process. A very thin self-adhesive solution means low thermal resistance. Conductive silicone sheets ensure the thermal interface between electronic components and cooling surfaces. The conductivity is adjusted to customer requirements. Silicone sheets adapt to the surfaces under pressure and act as electrical insulators (interface pads, thermal management, heat-conducting and ceramic films).

A key issue in industrial production is the connection of machined parts and components. Traditional connection methods in manufacturing technology include screwing, riveting, welding, crimping and soldering. In contrast, self-adhesive solutions are relatively new. All connection methods have specific characteristics, such as:
- With or without heat and/or vibrations
- Different peel strengths
- Limitations with regard to suitability for various materials
- Complexity, cycle time and costs in the production process
SMS offers a variety of ways to connect even the most difficult materials permanently or temporarily using adhesives or tapes. Compared to other connection techniques, self-adhesive solutions can provide added value, as the connection can act as an insulation or conductor, seal, marking or label at the same time (Acrylic Foam, VHB™, Isotac, SPT, AFB™, AFT).

Insulation protects against electrical fields and electricity, magnetic fields, temperature and mechanical forces. In the field of electrical engineering, in particular, self-adhesive insulations are used to protect components from current leaks, electrical discharges, heat generation and similar types of interference. In this area, especially the optimized space ratio, the ability to produce complex shapes and highly durable self-adhesive solutions are decisive factors for their success (Makrofol™, Makrolon™, Lexan™, Kapton™, Mylar™, Hostaphan™, Formex™, Nomex®, Tyvek™, Glasgewebebänder, Polyimid films, PTEP Polyesterlaminate, PVC films, PTFE Teflon films, Acetat films, Epoxid films).

Security films are specifically designed for sealing labels. Security labels are used whenever brand protection, authenticity or product identification becomes an important issue. Possible applications include guarantee labels for the electronics industry, seals for government agencies or medications and non-transferable safety information for the automotive industry. Tampering or manipulating will destroy the security label. Typical applications include guarantee signs, test labels and tokens, seal labels for documents and security seals.
Safety films leave either a “void”-text or a checkerboard pattern. After their removal, the labels cannot be reused or be transferred.
SMS provides customized security labels in your choice of format and in various colors. The labels can be printed at the factory, for example, with a customer logo, or variable labels provided for use in thermal transfer printing (void, triangle and checkerboard tamper evident warnings, purple stop, radiant color, holographic films, destructible films, security stamping and UV color coding).

Self-adhesive warning signs have replaced traditional, riveted type signs and machine signs. Modern bonding techniques make it possible to apply warning signs, even to difficult surfaces, a variety of materials, and complex shapes, e.g. machines, vehicles and components.
Self-adhesive warning signs can meet a wide variety of technical criteria: for example, they can be permanent (e.g. for batch tracking and inventories) or be removable without leaving any residue (e.g. relabeling foil), scratch-resistant, cold and / or heat-resistant, made out of a specific material or to correspond to defined sizes and shapes. Furthermore, the use of the self-adhesive solutions can be optimized, e.g. by using dispensers for labels or ready-to-use self-adhesive warning sign sets to speed up the manufacturing process.
SMS offers a wide range of adhesive products and solutions, technical and above all customer-specific solutions, even for small quantities (UL, CSA, MIL, FDA listed, RoHS, REACH, ASR A 1.3, BGV A8, DIN EN ISO 7010, ANSI, reflective, phosphorescent and fluorescent).

Labeling is one of the most important applications of self-adhesive technology. Permanent labels have replaced riveted and machined signs. Modern bonding techniques make it easy to apply labels, even on difficult surfaces and complex structures. With modern quality assurance and logistics systems, demand for labels has risen steeply, in line with increased technical requirements. The use of bar codes, RFID solutions and Data Matrix Codes has become standard. Self-adhesive solutions can respond to a large variety of technical criteria: for example, they can be permanent (e.g. for batch tracking and inventories) or be removable without leaving residue (e.g. relabeling foil), can be scratch-resistant, cold and/or heat-resistant, can be produced out of a certain material or have to correspond to a defined size and shape. The labels can be printed at the factory, ready for use by the customer, or printed by the customer using standard thermal transfer printing or laser printing. Another requirement may be the printing of barcodes or sequential numbers. Furthermore, the use of the self-adhesive solutions can be optimized, e.g. by using dispensers for labels or ready-to-use self-adhesive identification plate sets to speed up the manufacturing process. SMS offers a wide range of adhesive products and solutions, technical and above all customer-specific solutions, even in small quantities (UL, CSA, MIL, FDA listed, RoHS, REACH, ASR A 1.3, BGV A8, DIN EN ISO 7010, ANSI, reflective, phosphorescent, fluorescent, thermal transfer labels and laser printed labels).
